Pre-E3 2009: The Grinder Revealed
Vampires, werewolves, zombies -- grind them to hell in High Voltage Software's stunning new cooperative online FPS.
Cytuj
IGN: We can tell in screenshots that you're pushing a lot of on-screen characters. Tell us about this advancement to the Quantum 3 engine. How many characters can you push at once?

Eric: Right now we're pushing many highly detailed characters at once; better looking than almost anything else you'll see on the Wii right now.

Kerry: We call the technology our Imposter and Instancing system. We are able to take a single enemy and replicate him over and over again. Along with the replication, we can also scale, color, and otherwise modify each instance. This allows us to get an unprecedented number of unique enemies on screen at once at a fraction of the cost to do it otherwise. During our in-house testing, we have been able to see up-to 65 enemies on screen at once. These were initial tests? [Smiles]

Matt: Quantum 3 has once again been upgraded to pull off some majorly cool visual effects. It seems like we should be able to pull off even more on-screen enemies at some point. We never put a limit on our creativity. If it seems like it's worthwhile to have a cool feature in our games, we always find a way to make it work in the engine. It's pretty incredible to see so many monsters rushing after you in The Grinder. Each one is moving independently and doing its own thing. But all of them are trying to kill you.

IGN: All right. Let's talk about a great feature. The Grinder features an online multiplayer mode. Tell us all about it. How does it work?

Eric: With The Grinder, we really wanted to provide people with a top-notch cooperative experience so we've included online cooperative mode, which you'll be able to see at E3.

Kerry: The game is being designed from the ground up for online cooperative gameplay experience. Players are able to play the entire single-player game over the network. We do have some additional things planned, but we are not ready to talk about those at this time.

Matt:
So far the co-op mode has been working out great, with zero lag while displaying tons of enemies on the screen at once. We've wanted this feature in our games for a long time and we're really proud to be bringing this feature to The Grinder. Oh and there's also split screen coop mode currently running in the demo, which is also pretty awesome for those who may not have access to play together using a Wi-Fi connection.

IGN: When are you hoping to release the game?

Eric: The goal is holiday 2010 and our projects tend to ship on time more often than not!

Matt: Just as soon as we find a publisher for the game we'll be able to give an official release date. This all feels pretty similar to where we were at a year ago with The Conduit. Only we've actually got a consumer display booth as a base of operations at this year's E3, which is cool on so many levels! The best part for me personally being that Eric Nofsinger won't make me carry around a Wii dev kit and TV on my back like a pack mule, in order to give demos of the game during the show. Or at least I don't think that he will.

Eric: We'll talk later, Matt...

Kerry: But fortunately for The Conduit it all worked out pretty great in the end!

- czterech bohaterów o różnych zdolnościach
- elementy RPG
- bardzo duża ilość przeciwników na ekranie ( na dzień dzisiejszy startuje z wynikiem 65 !!! )
- broń tradycyjna i " nietradycyjna "
- wsparcie MotionPlus i WiiSpeak
- kooperacja online i split screen dla 4 graczy
- potwory współpracują ze sobą i różnią się stylami polowania na gracza

Brzmi smakowicie  .
Premiera przewidywana jest na zimę 2010 .

Pewnie mówisz o Legendary. The Grinder będzie podobne raczej do Left4Dead
Zapowiada się nieźle. Może HVS wyrośnie nam na drugie RARE  :)

Przypomina Left 4 Dead w dużym stopniu - szeregi słabych jednostek dziko szarżujących w naszym kierunku wymieszane z większymi okazami. W każdym razie nieźle.

E3 2009: The Grinder Hands-on and Coop Eyes-on
High Voltage's Left 4 Dead-style first-person shooter controls tight and fast as you relentlessly gun down enemies offline or online.
Cytuj
We don't think we need to tell you that The Grinder looks great on Nintendo's console, both because of its pleasing art style and also because of the technology behind it. The enhanced Quantum 3 engine and impostor system allows HVS to draw more characters on-screen than ever before without sacrificing the framerate, and there's all sorts of new lighting effects and advanced particle systems in addition to crisper textures and more realistic guns and animations.

The Grinder does not yet have a publisher, but we don't think HVS will have any trouble whatsoever finding one. We'll have more on the title soon, but while you wait be sure to check out our E3 walkthrough videos if you haven't already.

High Voltage says it would be great for The Grinder to have 100 enemies on screen, always looking to impress
Cytuj
It would be great if we can get 100 enemies running on screen at once but if it?s not necessary then we won?t go that route. Or if it seems cool, then we?ll do it. HVS? goal has been - and maybe this will help clarify some of what we?re thinking under the hood - we want to show players things they?ve never seen before. And moving forward with all of our games we want to do things that are more and more impressive. So that when gamers hear of our upcoming games, and finally get a chance to play them, they know that there is a developer out there that really cares about bringing them a quality entertainment experience.? - The Grinder Art Director, Matt Corso

The Grinder will most likely not be a Pay-2-Play game
Cytuj
?I think the answer to that is most likely not [Pay 2 Play]. Because the Wii servers let players play online for free, The Grinder will take advantage of that. Once you purchase the game you?re free to play online with your friends as much as you like, for as long as you like.? - Matt Corso, The Grinder art director

The Grinder Diaries: Changes Since E3
High Voltage Software details two of the gameplay refinements it's made to the coop-online shooter.
Cytuj
The Sheriff
One of the things we knew we could improve on from the original demo was our Sheriff character. His monologue distracted from the gameplay and he did the same thing in the same place each time you played. Even though he was flawed, we thought he was a fun character and somebody that we wanted to utilize. The question was: how do we make it exciting and different each time through? The idea that we implemented was for NPCs in our game (we've been referring to them as "innocents") to show up randomly in a location. When they do, you can choose to save them and potentially reap the reward, or let them get torn to shreds by monsters while you save your own skin. If you were to accidentally peg them with a Molotov cocktail, then so be it. You can't hunt monsters without shouldering the guilt of some collateral damage, right? With that in mind, we gave the Sheriff his own AI brain and set him loose at a random point in the demo level. He runs around screaming like a maniac and any nearby monsters try to take a bite out of him. It turned out to be a lot of fun to try to save him, especially since you can't predict what monsters will be in the location or when you will see him. At the end of the level, if you do save the Sheriff, you're given a monetary bonus that you can use for equipment upgrades and other special stuff.

The Sheriff is just a small part of the game, but he's a good example of the approach that we're taking with all of our features, which is to provide unpredictable moments where players can affect the outcome of events. Each time through, the story plays out a different way depending on your choices. As you watch the gameplay footage, keep in mind that things are still at a rough first pass, so not everything looks or functions exactly as it will a year from now.
The Scoring System
Our E3 demo was a great demo, but it wasn't exactly a game yet. There were no objectives, no elements to let you know that you'd successfully finished or to tell you how well you did. Our answer for that was to generate a scoring system based on various factors like monsters killed, headshots, killing sprees (a string of quick consecutive kills we call "the longest Grind"), ammo spent, player deaths, and more. Once we got this system designed and implemented, it totally changed the nature of the game by evaluating a player's performance. This, in turn, gave it a strong competitive aspect. Just the other day, we had a team contest to see who could rack up the highest score in our new arena survival location, which we've named "The Dust Bowl." Dan Kaufman, our lead programmer, managed to rack up 605 kills before he was finally taken down by a combination of vampires and werewolves. Steve Caywood, our lead designer, who came in second place, claims that Dan cheated by exploiting the bed of the pickup truck as a cover point. I suspect that there will be a rematch sometime soon.

The scoring system will eventually have hooks to in-game achievements as well as the game economy, which will allow for various upgrades to player gear. It will also become the foundation of some of the different game modes that you'll be able to play with (and possibly against) your friends. Check out the Dust Bowl video that shows a taste of survival in the arena and the scoring system.

There is a lot more that we've been up to, but we're not quite ready to share all of our new developments. Keep an eye out for more Grinder info and don't forgenew developments. Keep an eye out for more Grinder info and don't forget to write in to tell us what you think. We'll be reading the boards as usual.

"The expansion of Grinder to 360 and PS3 and its subsequent change in gameplay and perspective has been somewhat misinterpreted as a universal change across all platforms. We still genuinely love the Wii and would ideally like to see a publishing partner pick up both a FPS Wii version and a third-person action version specific to the 360 and PS3. We have invested more than year into the Wii; the game is extremely fun, and frankly, we wouldn't want to see that work 'thrown away'. But when we decided to add the 360 and PS3 platforms it didn't seem to make much sense to jump on the rainbow chasing treadmill of trying to do the same game for such dissimilar consoles and end up short changing one or the other." - High Voltage's chief creative officer, Eric Nofsinger

RUMOR - The Grinder still alive, being published by Warner Bros.?
Cytuj
I have one rule, and it's never to trust what Wikipedia says. I normally stay away from Wiki-based info, but this time around the information is just so random that I thought I'd share.
According to Wiki, The Grinder is being published by Warner Bros. this October. Is the long-in-development title actually seeing life on the Wii before Wii U comes our way? Thanks to Mr. Angry for the heads up.
