Earlier this morning, Criterion Games, developer of EA's Burnout Franchise, hinted at a new SSX game in development on Twitter."Crash FM off-air today. DJ Atomika is off riding the Peak 3 Jam.."While this could just be a joke about the severe winter weather in Guildford or a passing reference to DJ Atomika's involvement with SSX3, there have been other rumormills grinding this one out. * DJ Atomika mentions in both the Burnout Paradise and final build (I heard it once or twice playing the game) that Mac (character from SSX franchise) is reporting fresh snow on Peak 3. * A few designs in SSX On Tour seemed to be taking cues from the Burnout Franchise up to that point. * EA Montreal's Alain Tascan revealed EA's intentions to bring the franchise back at some point.Some circumstances support Criterion taking on a rebirth of the SSX franchise. Burnout Paradise was a major success and the DLC support was probably the best in the business outside Rock Band. While being a great game, that cash cow has probably been milked dry and the Criterion folks are probably looking for a new project.Working against the rumor was an announcement back in June that Criterion is working on a new Need For Speed title due out in 2010 made by EA COO John Pleasants.While SSX On Tour and SSX Blur were successful games, they were both panned by fans and critics as inferior to SSX3 and SSX Tricky, so a revitalization would be great, especially in Criterion's capable hands. What do you think? Is Criterion just messing with us? Is it impossible for them to juggle a new Need for Speed with a new SSX? Is EA Montreal still home for SSX? Or is Criterion really working on revitalizing the franchise?

It appears that Craig Sullivan, the creative director of Criterion games (known for their magnificient Burnout Paradise series on PS3 and Xbox360), has been giving subtle hints as to their next project. The tweets "Elise on Snowdream" and "MONSTER TRICK" can only mean one thing: SSX is back. Given the demand for an HD AAA snowboarding title, it seems logical that EA would make an announcement at this summer's upcoming E3 Expo. Quite frankly, we couldn't be more excited.
