LucasArts has lifted the lid on Wii, DS, PS2 and PSP game Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, which was partially revealed yesterday.Sadly we're still without a date, but there are some rather rough screenshots to be had, plus word of campaign co-op featuring a familiar character who has never been playable before.Staff of Kings is set in 1939 as World War II breaks out across Europe, and locations vary from Chinatown in San Francisco to the dense jungles of Panama. The prize - as the title suggests - is a powerful relic: the Staff of Moses. And Indy will have to move fast to beat nemesis Magnus Voller to the punch.Punching, incidentally, will be handled on Wii by gesture combat. Matching on-screen gestures will also be Indy's ticket to escaping crumbling ruins or overwhelming odds - not to mention the Wiimote-flicking control of the whip.Staff of Kings won't just be combat, though, but feature plenty of puzzles and "Hot Set" environments that can be pushed and pulled and manipulated to outwit enemies or de-trigger ancient traps. There are "burst sequences", too: periods of intense action where, for instance, the Wiimote is used as a gun to shoot on-screen targets.Multiplayer also features, and will let up to four people fight each other in biplane or tank free-for-alls. Presumably there are more normal brawls available as well.Incidentally, vehicles will be available throughout the campaign; there are ridable elephants and rafts as well as aforementioned tanks and biplanes. And that's the Wii version. The DS game replaces gesture controls with stylus input, while the PSP and PS2 offerings provide an array of combat, chases and physics puzzles to keep people entertained.
The game, titled Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, was rumored to be on the cover when the teaser was revealed last issue. The game retains its classic roots and features plenty of action and a story that would be fit for a movie that focuses on the biblical item. Some of the news revealed includes: * Hold the B button and swing the Wii Remote to use Indiana Jones' whip. The whip is used for smashing obstacles, swinging over pits or grasping onto objects. * Gestures include right and left jabs, hooks and uppercuts. The attack will be determined by the player's own gestures with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. * A is used to dodge, while B is used to counterattack. Z is used to grapple. * Indiana Jones can take advantage of his surroundings. He can use various different items that are simply laying around. * Indiana Jones will travel the entire world, from locations such as California, Central America, Istanbul, and Nepal. * The game takes place after the third film in 1939. * The game's villain is Magnus Voller. * Near the beginning of the game the player will have to control a plane, doing so by holding the WIi Remote upright and using it to steer. The b button is used to shoot. Other vehicles in the game include boats and motorcycles. * The Havok engine will be used to add a sense of unpredictability. * Maggie O'Malley plays the role of leading lady. * A cooperative mode is present, though LucasArts didn't reveal who the second playable character is, albeit it is someone from the series' past, and someone who all Indy fans will recognize. * The game will include a multitude of unlockable content from movie trailers, concept art, to alternate costumes and skins for Indiana Jones, as well as a classic Indiana Jones video game as well. * A Nintendo DS version of the game is also in the works, though virtually nothing is known about it.
GS: What about content? Will there be any unique content on the different platforms?MV/JS: Indy explores the catacombs underneath Paris in that DS-exclusive location. On the PSP version the game begins in 1922 when Indy is just a young lad exploring ancient Mayan ruins with a schoolmate who will eventually become his archnemesis. On the Wii version you?ll be able to drive a motorbike, fly planes using the Wii Remote like a flight stick, drive tanks, and escape sudden death in a raft by rowing.
Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings-7.5
Closing CommentsStaff of Kings is an odd game because it has so much going for it, including fun level designs, great variety, and a wealth of unlockables, but the end experience is inescapably marred by stupidly implemented motion controls on Wii. I wouldn't say they completely break the gameplay scenarios, but they absolutely do detract from them. Smart Wii developers learned a long time ago never to rely solely on motion because 1) nobody actually wants to waggle their way through a five- plus-hour game and 2) they aren't very reliable. That LucasArts and A2M chose to use gestures so religiously demonstrates a breathtaking level of ignorance to these truths, which is unfortunate, because the simple inclusion of an alternate control scheme would have made a lot of gamers happy. If you're an Indy fan, you'll still like the adventure to be had -- true enough, there are still some engaging puzzles and the sheer variety in challenges and locales is remarkable. Everyone else, however, is better off leaving the Staff of Kings undiscovered.
You'll love * Environmentally aware brawling * Environments look lovely * The most authentic Indy game yet You'll hate * Too many remote-waggling quick-time events * Falls back on terrible minigames * Sometimes frustrating and dull
