The Nintendo Digital Event has thrown up a few surprises already today, one of them being a new Wii U game called Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.Veterans of Super Mario 3D World will instantly recognise the concept behind this just-announced title; it's based on the Captain Toad mini-puzzles found in that game. Players have to control Captain Toad through a series of 3D mazes in search of treasure (unsurprisingly!). The game sports a similar visual style to its 3D platforming predecessor. No other launch details were announced other than a Holiday 2014 release window.
As was the case with Super Mario 3D World, Toad is a gorgeous and confidently directed game. The environment is colorful, the characters are expressive, and the diorama feel of each stage evokes a similar tactile tone of games like Tearaway, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. In a next-gen world filled with 1080p browns and grays, it’s nice to see Nintendo among the handful of developers who still see things using the entire color spectrum.Of course, another thing that Nintendo has mastered over the course of the past 30 years are the little details in games that can so easily be missed. From the theatrical presentation of Super Mario Bros. 3, to Link’s expressive face in Wind Waker, to the litany of historical nods in Smash Bros., almost every Nintendo game warrants a trivia page. Captain Toad falls in this same category – in my brief time with the game, I couldn’t help but fawn over the subtle fear and trepidation that crept over Toad’s face whenever he was in danger. Sweat dripped as he made his way up the volcano, panic set in as I ran away from goombas, and the squeal of terror he made when we came face-to-face with a Boo really helped reinforce the fact that Toad is way out of his element. In just four short stages, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker completely sold me on the idea of Mario 3D World’s fun diversions begin able to stand at the core of their own retail game.
It does appear that Nintendo are positioning this as a mid-tier price Wii U retail game, as North American retailer Kmart has priced their preorder at $39.99. This places it alongside games like Game & Wario which have also launched with a MSRP of $39.99, two-thirds the standard US retail release price.
ConclusionCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a rare case of a game that feels truly designed — from the ground up — with the Wii U in mind. The GamePad is utilised just enough to be worthwhile without being a nuisance, and the only mis-step is that the difficulty later in the game can't be eased by assistance from a friend, parent or game-savvy son or daughter. That aside, it's relentlessly charming and joyous, and is another example of Nintendo's developers flexing their creative muscles along with game-making skill. There's nothing else like this on Wii U, and it's a welcome addition to the system's growing library.8/10
