Ubisoft embraces Wii MotionPlus for Red Steel sequel

Ubisoft is one of the first publishers to confirm the use of the Wii MotionPlus peripheral to improve the execution of its core Wii titles.

Adopting the tech for the sequel to Red Steel, Alain Corre, Ubisoft's executive director, has said the improvement of 3D motions will help the sequel achieve the ambitious gameplay attempted in the first game.

"Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and this new device will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product," said Corre, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.

The original Red Steel was released on the same day the Wii launched in Europe, and attempted to mimic the users' movements for gunplay and hand-to-hand combat, but was criticised for a lack of sensitivity.

Corre believes that the Wii technology wasn't finished at the time of launch, but the recent announcement by Nintendo that the MotionPlus add-on will track true 1:1 responsive movement will allow the development team to realise its ambitions.

"The Red Steel brand is strong - I think we released it on year one, and that people understood that it was a first try on new technology, technology that wasn't completely finished. And our game tried to grab the best out of it, and was a bit rushed to be sure to offer something in year one to Wii consumers," he added.

"So Red Steel is a brand, and as with every brand we have, we now have to reach the top quality possible. What was missing was the preciseness of the sabre - and with this new device I think it will change the experience."

Ubisoft is one of the few third-party publishers to see considerable sales success on the Wii, and Corre puts that success down to the amount of time spent on developing games for the unique home console, compared to competitors.

"When you make a great game, you need more than one year of development," offered Corre.

"A lot of games are made in less than a year, but they're not great products and they're not selling at all. So it takes some time to develop good games. This year we're coming with Shaun White, which we've developed over 18 months, and the same for Rayman 3.

"I think these two games can be in the top ten of the Wii charts at Christmas again, and there will also be new Wii games announced soon - more games dedicated to capturing this new audience," he concluded.

News: Red Steel 2 First Look In Next NGamer
Cytuj
British publication NGamer are set to feature a first look at Red Steel 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the slashy/shooty Wii launch title.

Red Steel 2 is an elusive beast; Ubisoft haven't confirmed much beyond its existence, and the fact that it's set to support the waggle-enhancing MotionPlus accessory. Beyond that, gamers are completely in the dark.

However, it looks as though Red Steel 2 is in a presentable state right now, as the "Next Month" page in Issue #34 of British Nintendo magazine NGamer promises to feature a first look at Red Steel 2 and "MotionPlus swordsmanship" in the May 2009 issue, which will hit news stands on Wednesday March 25th.

Ubisoft have slated Red Steel 2 for a Q4 2009 release, which gives you plenty of time to catch on the highly-anticipated sequel's flawed yet admirable predecessor.

Red Steel 2 [Wii - Prototype / Beta]
Cytuj
Red Steel 2 is the presumed sequel for the famous FPS that was released for the Wii in 2006, a project that was in development at Ubisoft Montreuil (this studio was also responsible for Red Steel 1) in 2007. It seems that these screens and documents were taken from an early concept of the project, some of which are from a set of ?fantasy themed? levels (probably for bonus missions or multiplayer modes).

Development of this Red Steel 2 prototype was stopped in October 2007 when Ubisoft raised concerns about the game?s quality. Since then, Ubisoft Paris started from scratch and a ?new? Red Steel 2 is planned for a release in 2009. Ubisoft Montreuil went on with making Rayman Raving Rabbits 2 and TV Party.

Pojawiły się nowe informacje .
Cytuj
The article on Red Steel 2 is mainly a 7-8 page interview with 9 screen shots and about the same of concept art. Half is a preview describing a series reboot and the other half is an interview with the Art Director (Stephane Bachelet), Lead Game Designer (Roman Campos Oriola) and Creative Director (Jason Vanderberghe). They have the game running at 60fps, the game is set in the fictional dester town of Caldera described as Tokyo meets Reno. The basically rebooted when they saw Motion Plus and decided to go a different direction with the game.

The article is fairly general and focused on the change in setting and what not, there is a lot of "we can't talk about that yet". I also haven't sat down and read it yet, just skimming.

- Red Steel 2 is a series reboot
- runs at 60fps
- takes places in the fictional town of Caldera (think Tokyo meets Reno)
- when Ubisoft saw the MotionPlus, they decided to reboot and take things in a new direction
- cel-shaded style, much like XIII
- aiming for Teen rating ?The gore just doesn?t fit for us and what we?re trying to do?
- no multiplayer
- Wii MotionPlus exclusive (can only play with Wii MotionPlus?)
- dual wielding Gun and sword might happen

Nintendo Power: Will the game include any multiplayer modes?

"No our focus is on creating a strong single player experience and taking full advantage of Wii Motion Plus. Adding multiplayer would detract from that focus. That's another example of something we learned from the first Red Steel"
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=359983&page=6

Red Steel 2 Exclusive In ONM 43

http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=8106
Ubisoft official announces Red Steel 2 - press release
Cytuj
SAN FRANCISCO ? April 29, 2009 ? Today Ubisoft announced Red Steel 2, exclusively for the Wii(TM) system from Nintendo. Red Steel remains one of the most successful Wii titles and the only brand created specifically for the launch of the platform. Red Steel 2 is being developed by Ubisoft Paris and will be available for the 2009 holiday season.

Red Steel 2 returns with an artistic style and flair created just for Wii. Set in a desert-bound, high-tech metropolis, Red Steel 2 is a revolution in the action-fighting genre, taking full advantage of the capabilities of the Wii MotionPlus(TM) accessory. Your movements are faithfully replicated on-screen, putting the emphasis on swinging, shooting and fun! With the ability of the Wii MotionPlus to sense the strength of a swing, you will literally be able to make an impact on your adversaries through power and precision.

?Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console,? said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing US at Ubisoft. ?Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.?

Just as Red Steel broke ground as the only third-party brand created for the launch of the Wii, Red Steel 2 will be the must-have game of Holiday 2009 for those who wish to stretch their own capacities and fully experience a game that was built from the ground up to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

More details on Red Steel 2 will be revealed in the June issue of Nintendo Power magazine. For more information on Red Steel 2, please visit www.redsteel2.com.

Red Steel 2 - more details reveal some controls, non-linear gameplay, and explanation for lack of multiplayer
Cytuj
- some aspect of leveling up your character
- gun and sword combos
- ?RS2 is tightly focused on intensely physical first person sword fighting, with gunplay a secondary option?
- hold Z to lock onto enemy
- hold down C and swing to block, vertical and horizontal blocks
- switch lock-on at any time
- screen prompts you if you?re being attacked from behind. Press A to quick-turn in this situation
- many enemies wear bulletproof armor
- not open world
- not a linear game, multiple paths to take
- several hub-worlds
- side quests
- collectibles
- return to old areas with new powers and abilities
-?non-combat use of MotionPlus wont be limited to opening doors?
- boss fights
- production began last summer
- Ubisoft discussing the lack of multiplayer: ?We would love to create a multiplayer engine, but not right now. It?s single player because we want to really focus on the core mechanic and as much as we all want to kill each other with swords, it?s not going to happen this time.
- Ubisoft on releasing a multiplayer mode through DLC: ?That would be cool. The world has changed, and we can do that sort of thing. I certainly think that would be cool. I?d buy it. But we need to be careful bringing out something that people think should be in the main game.?

ONM - A few more snippets from the Red Steel 2 preview
Cytuj
What is MotionPlus like? It works, that's all you need to know. I knows where your arm is and how you're holding the Remote. It knows how strong your swing of the Remote is, and it knows whether you're going for a vertical, horizontal, diagonal slice, and everywhere in between.

So it's a very different game from the first Red Steel, that's for sure. Using the Nunchuck to move, you can still point at the screen and press B to shoot, but it is clear that gunplay won't be the main attraction.

Ubisoft wants to make game progression as non-linear as possible, but is also very insistent that Red Steel 2 is not an open world game. Many of the stages are closed-off affairs offering little escape from the action, which keeps the temp up. There are different paths to take along the way, and you'll move on through the game via several different hub worlds, each more challenging than the last.

There are side quests to complete, collectables, combos, Finish Kills and other moves to learn too.

Red Steel 2 coming in November?
http://nintendodpad.com/Welcome/News/Entries/2009/5/4_Red_Steel_2_coming_in_November.html

Cytuj
Gamestop has updated their website with a Red Steel 2 release date of Nov. 24th. The interesting part is that they have it named ?Red Steel 2 MP?.
Does this MP mean Motion Plus? Will there be two different versions of the game to buy?
From what we assume this game will be much like WiiSports Resort in that it makes Motion Plus mandatory, but we shall see.

Nowe info :
Cytuj
- Cannot cheat the game
- Can?t just sit down, waggle Wiimote with short/sharp motions
- When you quickly waggle the Wiimote, that will translate to a quick slice in-game
- Need to actually try to deal out big damage
- Sword also used for defense (thus better than a gun during combat)
- There will be instances where you will have to deal with multiple enemies
- Still use B button + pointer to shoot
- Reconfirmed that you can pull off sword + gun combos
- Passing through near-future desert town (Aldera)
- Architect is a mix of East and West
- Hero is mysterious at the beginning
- Hero is a take on Clint Eastwood character in the Dollars movies
- Nameless, faceless, friendless at the start
- Pretty powerful from the beginning of the game
- There will be plenty of variety in missions
- Need greater thought/skill against bosses
- Objectives connected to the hero
- Different levels of blocking as you progress

Ubisoft comments on Red Steel 2 trailer:
http://www.nintendoeverything.com/?p=15582

Cytuj
Ubisoft has finally commented on the first Red Steel 2 trailer. As can be noticed in the video, it was never supposed to make it out to the public. The trailer was for ?internal use only.? Ubisoft has also said that the video is a pre-production trailer. So what Wii owners will see in the final product could end up being a bit different. Since the company was not willing to comment on any specifics of the trailer, fans will probably have to wait until E3 for more information.

Ubisoft says they?re taking a ?huge risk? making Red Steel 2 MotionPlus only
Cytuj
?It?s a huge risk. We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high. I would love to say to you that it?ll be compatible with just a regular controller, but the gameplay simply isn?t there without MotionPlus. That core experience just isn?t there without it.? - Jason Vandenberghe, creative director of Red Steel 2

Red Steel 2 visual style explained
Cytuj
As you can see Red Steel 2 went towards art rather than realism, and there is a reason for this. Creative director for the title, Jason Vandenberghe explained to Nintendo Power why they chose this visual style over a more realistic one.

?It?s really hard to impress people with realistic graphics on Wii. It?s not impossible. Resident Evil 4 proves you can do it. But it?s really hard. Also, the gameplay experience that we are trying to deliver has a certain arcade-action feel. So realistic graphics won?t feel right.?

Red Steel 2 looks beautiful, and the change in visual style is a huge thumbs up from us. If you were able to see the leaked trailer you will see what we mean, and apparently screenshots say a lot.

?You see a screenshot of Red Steel 2, and you know it?s a game. We?re not trying to convince you that it?s a movie, because we?re making this for gamers. It?s for them.?

We are very excited for this game and can?t wait till more screens become available. When they do, be sure we?ll post them.

Red Steel 2 - new you can slash whenever you want
Cytuj
?(speaking of using your sword whenever you want) That was the number-one most requested feature from people who played the first game. And we couldn?t agree more.? - Jason Vandenberghe, Ubisoft

Red Steel 2 to have destructible environments:
http://nintendodpad.com/Welcome/News/Entries/2009/5/18_Red_Steel_2_to_have_destructible_environments.html

Cytuj
In the upcoming Red Steel 2, it has been confirmed that we will be able to beat stuff up.
Lead game designer Roman Campos Oriola told Nintendo Power:

?The basic idea is that bashing things with a sword is fun. So we plan to have as much destructibility in the environments as we can.?

Sounds great to us. Nintendo Power was shown a demo where the game designer actually pounded a car with his sword. Now we?re talking, or are we?

?We?re also building a gameplay mechanic around destructible objects.....but I can?t say more than that at the moment.?

Red Steel 2 checks whether you?re a younster or not
Cytuj
- Red Steel has an early tutorial that is meant to determine whether you are an adult or a child. Relatively weaker swings are associated with children, while more forceful swipes are for adults. Basically, if you barely want to move while playing, swing very lightly during the tutorial.

Ubi is planning an eight-to-twelve-hour game with Red Steel 2 and the title has shot up like a bullet to the top tier of my most wanted list. The developer seems to have taken note of all the complaints surrounding the first game, started fresh with a stunning new engine and incorporated MotionPlus support for truly engaging sword combat. Asked why readers like you should be so excited, Vandenberghe's honest enthusiasm was hard to miss. "This is the game that will finally give you first-person sword-fighting the way you wanted it, man," he said. "And I'm absolutely delighted to be able to say that and feel like it's not bullsh%@! If you like swords, this is the game for you."

I've posted upward of 30 screenshots of Red Steel 2 today. Take them in. And then watch the official trailer, the full E3 level walkthrough with audio commentary by Vandenberghe and top it all off with our own stunning direct-feed in glorious 480p. I think you're going to like what you see and let me just tell you, it's nothing compared to playing Steel 2 at 60 frames per second on a proper widescreen television.

Interviews: Red Steel 2's Jason VandenBerghe
Cytuj
NL: The Motion+ implementation is great, but did you or do you have any concerns over the attachment?

JV: Obviously the big concern is that we're selling to a reduced userbase, and it all depends on how well the attachment is taken up by the console owners. We looked at doing a version without MotionPlus, and the lag from when you attack was something like half a second, which doesn't sound like a lot but ends up with a game totally different from what you played today. There's a reason there haven't been many games like the original Red Steel since its launch, which is that it just isn't possible to get the right level of accuracy without MotionPlus.

NL: With that in mind, did Nintendo give you a lot of support to get to grips with MotionPlus?

JV: Oh yeah, they were great. We got our first MotionPlus a few weeks before it was officially announced, and we were like "now we can do it!". Nintendo were great though, they gave us loads of early libraries for MotionPlus and really gave us a lot of support. In a wider sense we worked very closely with the guys over at Retro Studios, and the producer of Metroid Prime came to work with us and gave us a lot of insight into how they handled things.

Red Steel 2 Hands-On
Ubisoft's Red Steel sequel was playable at E3 09, and we wasted no time jumping on the game at the company's booth.
Cytuj
Red Steel 2 is an interesting proposition. It's the sequel to a game that was poorly received upon release, but the developers genuinely seem to have learned a lot from the experience. The sequel has a completely different story to the original, and, in fact, the only thing that the two games have in common is the gun/sword-based combat. We managed to play the game for the first time today at the LA Convention Center, as well as find out more about it with lead designer Roman Campos Oriola.

Red Steel 2 is a Western/Japanese hybrid, with a storyline that mixes ninja swordplay and a Wild West setting. As the main character, you decide to return home after many years, but you're captured by a rival gang and are dragged into town by a rope attached to a motorcycle. You manage to shoot your captor and make your escape, and the tutorial introduces you to the basic movement and combat controls.

You aim and move just like you did in the original Red Steel, but Wii MotionPlus support means that the controls are much more refined than before. You push your aiming reticle to the side of the screen to turn, for example, but now the farther you push, the faster you turn. The support for Nintendo's latest peripheral also really improves the sword combat, which is much more accurate than before. You really need to make huge swipes with the remote for strong attacks on enemies with armour, while holding the A button lets you perform highly accurate parrying moves.

While the controls are an obvious improvement to Red Steel 2, we also have to compliment the game on its looks. It could be described as cel-shaded, although the game manages to retain a gritty edge, but it certainly has a distinct visual style all its own. Even better, it's running in 60fps at this stage, although that could change according to the technical limitations placed on the final build. Sadly, the same can't be said for the violence--while you can hold A to perform finishing moves, such as a sword-based execution, there's not a drop of blood to be seen in any of the game.

One of the coolest things we did in the game was break into a safe. You hold the Wii remote up to your ear and then tilt the remote to turn the wheel on the safe. When you hear a click through the Wii Remote, you know that you've hit the correct combination, and you have to do this three times to open the safe. It's definitely a cool little minigame, and even over the noise of the show, we still managed to get into the safe.

Developer Roman Campos Oriola left us with one final tease from the demo, which he showed us after we'd played through the first level. He showed how, about one hour into the game, you can upgrade your sword with special powers, such as the ability to fling enemies into the air. Once they're in midair, you can shoot them or jump up in the air and smack them down to earth. Finally, he told us that Red Steel 2 is going to be a strict single-player experience, so no multiplayer features will ship in the game.

We really enjoyed our time playing Red Steel 2, and even though we played it on the show floor, we didn't have any problem getting into the new swinging mechanics of the swordplay. We hope to bring you more on the game post-E3.
