inFamous is going to be the "next big thing," if Sony has their way. The upcoming 2009 PS3 exclusive from Sucker Punch is going to be getting a massive marketing treatment from SCEA, with a "blockbuster multimillion dollar marketing campaign" in the works. According to a SCEA press release, inFamous will be treated to "aggressive television, print, online and viral advertising campaigns, full promotional support, dedicated point-of-purchase displays and merchandising support." For an untested, new IP, Sony is daring to support the title as a true flagship title.Sony has become much more aggressive with marketing as of late, especially with the upcoming Resistance 2, which is also getting the same treatment. It'll be interesting to see the extent of this "blockbuster" marketing campaign, and how it will be able to shape the public opinion of such an ambitious (and cool-looking) game.
Sony has moved to set the record straight in regards to the length of Sucker Punch?s upcoming open world adventure title, InFamous, following comments steaming from a live text interview with Eurogamer last week.Speculation arose after Game Director Nate Fox responded to a reader question regarding whether or not long games were palatable in today?s climate of rising development costs, in which he said, ?it seems to me that it's not about length, but about quality.? He then added that InFamous would place the highest value on quality. As a result, readers assumed ? erroneously - that the hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 outing would turn up a tad short in the game length department.
In an interview with 1up.com, Sucker Punch game director Nate Fox revealed a few new details on their upcoming 2009 PlayStation 3 exclusive, Infamous. In addition, 1up was also able to obtain some new screenshots on the title, depicting Cole?s super-human abilities. One of the main points that Fox touched on was creating a superhero game that works: "Our hero, Cole, has powers that are designed from the ground up to work well in the context of a videogame," said Fox."For instance, he can shoot lighting bolts out of his hands -- why? Because shooting in videogames works really freaking well. Same with being able to climb everywhere in the world and jump between buildings -- it's fun to do! This is our core strategy in crafting our superhero -- we're building the world around his powers and his powers around what's fun to do in the world."He also revealed that the team?s most significant challenge was the application of Cole?s climbing ability, allowing him to seamlessly move about the city and scale any building."The biggest challenge was getting Cole's climb ability to work just right," said Fox. "We'd promised ourselves that the whole city was going to be scalable. This is, as you might imagine, a hard promise to live up to, but now that it all works, it was clearly worth all the effort. Being able to smoothly skulk along the rooftops and then jump down onto the heads of a bunch of bad guys is great. You really feel like a superhero."
PS.

Infamous is awesome. Period. End of statement. I know a lot of times we at IGN get railed on for over-hyping games -- we tell you a game looks great during the preview period but then crap on it when review time comes -- but I'm willing to put my reputation on the line right now and tell you I can't see that happening with this game.Infamous is a blast, and you're going to need to buy it come spring.
