Overlord: Dark Legend interview - the success of this game will help determine Codemasters? future approach to Wii
Cytuj
RG: Is it completely new, everything we?ve seen in the game?

DS: Yeah, it?s entire. Everything in the game has been built form scratch for the Wii system. We didn?t want to do what other publishers do and just try and port an existing game to the Wii platform, so we?ve built an entirely new Overlord game for Wii. There are a number of reasons why we needed to do that, I mean, the way that the Wii game plays, you know the levels in the PS3 and the 360 just wouldn?t go with how the pointer kind of interacts with the game, we had to do that stuff anyway. And obviously, you can?t just save a 360 game and turn it into a Wii game, because the 360 is so much more powerful that you couldn?t build that stuff for the Wii. And also, we wanted to build a strong kind of new game. We want Overlord to be a really big franchise to Codemasters and the only way we can do that, the only way we can kind of make sure that we?re still making a Wii Overlord game is like we?re doing for the first time: we need to take the time to make a cool kind of unique product. So that?s what we?ve done. So, as you say, in the timeline of the Overlord games, the Wii version is a prequel to what?s on the 360 version, so a lot of the events in the gameplay, in the 360 version, are explained in the Wii game, like how the war between the elves and the dwarves started? [He goes on explaining some story details that we won?t spoil] If you haven?t played an Overlord game before, it?s not important you don?t pick upon these references, but for our hardcore fans, -they?re into Overlord gameplay- this is an incredible kind of an Overlord product.

RG: Ok so I guess we can expect more games from Codemasters. At this time, there is only a little amount of games from Codemasters. Starting with Overlord, can we expect more of these types of games from Codemasters? You have, for example, two racing games: you have F1 and you have the new Colin McRae, and these two are coming to Wii?

DS: Codemasters, as a company, we have to take Wii seriously and make Wii games in the right way. To be honest, something like Overlord is going to utterly determine how much more of this kind of content Codemasters pretends. This is a risk for us: we?re assuming that come next summer, there?s going to be a big market for this game to make it work for a while. We?re sure that?s going to work out, and I hope that we?re right. If we are proved really, really wrong and all Wii games that you want to play is Wii Fit, then it comes the problem. But, at this moment in time, I don?t work in the racing group of Codemasters or anywhere with action games, but as you said, the likes of McRae, the likes of F1, those will also come to Wii.

Overlord: Dark Legend Hands-on
Be the bad guy for a change.

The developers tell us they are making Overlord: Dark Legend for the hardcore Wii gamers, and from what we've played so far we think it will appeal to the core audience. It's set for release this June alongside Overlord: Minions on the Nintendo DS.

In addition to being served up a more lightweight challenge, Overlord: Dark Legend also suffers a notch in the technical stakes, with the gloriously detailed environments of the originals not quite making the transition to the Wii's 480p. While some of the levels you visit fare better than others, the engine tends to struggle when rendering lush foliage, and can end up looking garish and blocky, with accompanying frame-rate struggles. At best, the Greenvale fantasyland still looks gorgeous and inviting - indeed, the character and level design can be outstanding. Tackling evil gingerbread men is one highlight, as you smash through the candy-striped world of an evil witch, but it's an uneven experience on the whole. In addition, the largely useful automatic camera system can freak out if you happen to stumble into a corner of the level that it doesn't like, somewhat adding to the impression that the game could have benefitted from a little extra polish here and there.

As an introduction to the Overlord brand, there's no doubt that Overlord: Dark Legend does a fine job. With its joyfully evil brand of warm humour enlivening every encounter, it's a game that makes you feel good about being bad. And with slick controls and a satisfying blend of action and strategy, it's a game that's never less than enjoyable to play. But while it provides superior controls and less frustration than Overlord II, it regrettably falls down by failing to offer enough of a concerted challenge. There's a wealth of promise here, but maybe we'll have to wait for the next Wii version to see it live up to that.

What really needs to be mentioned, however, is that while the core gameplay of maneuvering a central powerful character while manipulating a color-coded horde of specialized peons is almost the same as in the other Overlord titles, overall the experience actually feels much different. Dark Legend has a much more linear focus, with clear objectives, few side quests, and just generally keeps the player on a path from start to completion. There's some Zelda or Metroid-ish backtracking once new abilities are obtained, but the option of dicking around with cosmetic changes to your castle is gone, and forging weapons and minion upgrades only uses gold as a resource, of which I always had plenty. In fact, as soon as I obtained a new hive for spawning different colored minions, I always found myself with enough gold on hand to fully upgrade it on the spot. The option of resurrecting minions from Overlord 2 isn't present here, and weirdly, it doesn't seem to matter just because your minions are so much more expendable and easy to upgrade.

In a way, Dark Legend is like Overlord with training wheels on. Which isn't by any means a bad thing. It introduces some fairly complicated gameplay in a painless way while maintaining focus on a great storyline, excellent dialogue, and the sheer glee of making a bunch of underlings break a lot of stuff along the way. It serves as both a great introduction to the series, and a fun distraction for veterans who've already enjoyed the games on other systems.

All in all Climax Studios has done a nice job of crafting a fun world to explore and plenty of enemies to decimate. The real issue is engine stability, and polish. While it?s amazingly fun to run around beating on helpless animals, commanding legions of minions with a simple aim of the Wii-mote pointer, and laughing at the well-crafted story and dialogue therein, there are just some obvious issues that can?t be ignored, and will ultimately impede your fun. Minion AI is moronic at times, ranging from delightful and aggressive to bordering on unusable. The camera is always a struggle as well, and with no way to move it outside of C-center and a pretty slow IR-based movement it can make battles and puzzles a hassle. More than anything though (save for the AI issues) the frame rate kills this one at times, freezing for a frame or two when summoning new Minions or in huge battles, and slowing down the actual in-game frame count to around 10-15 per second when things get really rough. When pitting this up against Climax?s other Wii project, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, the two games aren?t even in the same league. Overlord brings some entertaining elements and some true potential for the system, but the final result is just too buggy and unreliable to be ranked among Wii?s third party greats.
