Dead Space Extraction's unique Wii features explained: Why it isn't just on-rails:
http://www.gamingbits.com/content/view/5415/1/

Cytuj
Following up on a recent story on Dead Space Extraction, here's a few more bits picked up on the Wii game from the April 2009 issue of Game Informer (the one with BioShock 2's Big Sister on the cover). Steve Papoutsis, the Executive Producer on Dead Space Extraction, has called the game a "Guided First Person Experience". What sets it apart from the standard on-rails shooter game? Here's a rundown of the unique features you'll find in Dead Space Extraction:

- There are branching paths to select from. It's not just a one way route. Some alternate paths won't be so obvious.
- The game isn't always moving along like on-rails shooters do. Some slower paced moments help build-up scares.
- There are puzzle elements in the game that use the unique Wii Remote motion controls.
- The Wii Remote's speaker plays audio logs you find.
- Twisting the Wii Remote activates your weapon's alternate firing mode.
- Shake the Wii Remote to activate a green glow stick.
- You can adjust the amount of head bobbing motion.
- Unlike the original Dead Space, you'll be able to shoot during zero gravity movement.

For gamers familiar with the series, Dead Space Extraction will still make use of the Power Node upgrades and have some familiar weapons from the first game (Plasma Cutter, Line Gun, Flame Thrower, Pulse Rifle) and some new ones (Arc Welder, Rivet). There's also the use of a Gears of War-like active reload system. If you reload at the right time, your shots will be more powerful.

Another interesting feature revealed for Dead Space Extraction will be its HUD-less screen. The original Dead Space game used the back of the lead character's suit to show health information and weapon to show ammo count. Since Dead Space Extraction is shown in a first person perspective, where could you possibly put the health and ammo info while keeping the screen HUD-less? It's on the targeting reticle.

Dead Space Extraction demo hinted
Cytuj
Sounds like there may be a playable demo coming for Dead Space Extraction. A hint was dropped from EA's Dead Space Twitter account, isaacclarke: "Did walkthroughs on 3 Chapters in the game. We also reviewed our super secret special Demo build......guess it's not to secret anymore....".

issacclarke also revealed that the Wii game will likely get an "M" (for Mature) rating. It would be hard for a horror game series like Dead Space to get anything under an M rating. Nothing has been formally announced, but hopefully Dead Space Extraction will be getting a downloadable demo channel like Metroid Prime Corruption had. But then again, with an "M" rating, maybe the demo will be provided on disc with pre-orders? Hopefully we'll hear more soon. For now, it's wishful thinking (rumor).

Dead Space violence won?t be ?watered down? for Wii
Cytuj
Worried Dead Space: Extraction?s violence will be diluted for Wii? Fret no more. It isn?t.

?We?re definitely not planning to water it down at all for the Wii, but again, we?re not going to add in shock value just to have that,? the game?s exec producer, Steve Papoutsis, told VG247 in London last week.

?First and foremost we want to make a great game, and we want to make a great game that makes sense in the Dead Space universe.?

The on-rails shooter isn?t gratuitous, though, Papoutsis hastened to add.

?When we were working on Dead Space the original, we wanted to make a game that was terrifying, action-packed, kind of hit on all those things that people want to experience in a survival action horror game. We went all-out to do that,? he said.

?I think now that the expectation is that a Dead Space game has those kind of elements. We?re not going out of our way to make it extremely violent, it?s just the story is what the story is, and it?s not a pretty story.?

Extraction?s out this autumn, exclusively for Wii.

Cytuj
CVG : A presentation slide earlier mentioned ?a secret that propels the franchise forward?. What are you teasing?

Papoutsis : I can?t tell you - it?s a secret! Let?s just say there?s definitely connectivity between this game and Dead Space. There?s absolutely connectivity there and maybe? other stuff. I can?t really say.

EA 'experiment' in mature Wii content:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a155356/ea-experiment-in-mature-wii-content.html

Cytuj
EA?s upcoming Dead Space Extraction for the Nintendo Wii is an "experiment" in mature content for the system, according to Glen Schofield, general manager of developer Visceral Games.
Nintendo?s home console traditionally plays host to family-friendly software, but the Visceral Games exec believes that the survival-horror can attract a fanbase on the Wii.

"I'm confident - it is an experiment, but there's going to be 50 million Wiis out there by the time the game comes out, so if you only hit 2% of the installed base you've got a huge number," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

Schofield cited the success of other mature titles on the platform as proof that there is an audience for Dead Space among Wii owners. "There have been some [mature games] already, Resident Evil and House Of The Dead, that have done really well," he added.

"So we're pushing for that 80-plus-rated game, and that'll put you in the top 5% of all Wii games...because most do not have a great score."

Visceral Games - Dead Space: Extraction will still be scary, we promise
Cytuj
PM: In most survival horror games, the tension comes from not knowing where your enemies are, but with on-rails games, encounters are predictable. What makes Extraction scary?

SP: This is another area where we hope Extraction stands out. The team that worked on Dead Space is working on Extraction and we are using the learning from the original game to make sure our pacing helps to build tension and suspense. As I mentioned earlier our game is not a shooting gallery, we are using the camera in ways that will keep the player on the edge of their seat. This means when a combat scenario happens it should feel unique and unpredictable. We really want the player to be immersed in the Dead Space world. Imagine you are working on a puzzle, completely concentrating on fixing a circuit board; now add in waves of enemies that are charging towards you. This is one example of how we plan to vary up our combat and keep it feeling fresh. With this example you now have to deal with a puzzle element while dismembering the shit out of the oncoming Necromorphs. So far this has felt very unique and satisfying in our game.

What?s with Dead Space Extraction?s boxart?
http://nintendodpad.com/Welcome/News/Entries/2009/6/8_What%E2%80%99s_with_Dead_Space_Extraction%E2%80%99s_boxart.html

Cytuj
The new boxart for Dead Space Extraction has been released, but just seems so off for what the game is trying to be.
As you can see the original Dead Space boxart was a serious, almost claustrophobic cover that struck fear within the viewer.

Spoiler (kliknij, by wyświetlić/ukryć)

The Extraction boxart just does not convey that same sense of feeling in the way the original did.

Visceral Games states they really want the same atmosphere for the Wii game as the original but are they doing the same with the cover? We think not.

EA - putting mature-rated Dead Space: Extraction on Wii is a calculated risk, and a gamble
Cytuj
"Well, there has been some M-rated high-quality games released recently on Wii that we've taken note of, and that's why I think Dead Space: Extraction is a gamble. It's a calculated risk. Can a high-quality experience like that that appeals to a more mature audience work on the Wii platform? We spent a lot of research, time, and understanding that the customer dynamics of who's actually playing on the Wii, do they own multiple platforms, are there really gamers on the Wii, or is it mainly families and youth? But we think we've found a market on the Wii that would be interested in the Dead Space: Extraction experiment. We're going to take a gamble and build that market. You know, until you try, you don't really know if the hypothesis is correct or not." - EA Games label president Frank Gibeau

Dead Space: Extraction might not be a Wii exclusive after all
http://www.nintendoeverything.com/?p=20481

Cytuj
Dead Space: Extraction has long been known as a title only for Wii, but now there appears to be a fairly strong chance that the game could see a release on other platforms - at least if teased words from the game?s producer have any meaning.

At Comic-Con last night, EA held an ?Art of Making a Horror Video Game? panel and one of the questions brought up was whether Extraction is a Wii exclusive. Steve Papoutsis, executive producer of the title, said that it is ?right now? and added that the question asked was ?interesting.? An iPhone version wasn?t exactly ruled out either. Papoutsis noted that the concept of an iPhone version sounds ?pretty cool,? but it didn?t look as though he wanted to comment completely. Where Extraction may end up in the future is unknown for now, but discussion from last night?s panel seems to be hinting that the game won?t be an exclusive down the road. There doesn?t appear to be any other reason why Papoutsis would say that it?s Wii-only ?right now? instead of simply stating that it is - and will remain as - an exclusive for Nintendo?s console.

There were also a few new/old details discussed during the panel which you can check out below.

- Dev team encountered problems with story telling because players don?t complete games with one session
- Wanted to make sure that Extraction wouldn?t interfere with the overall storyline of Dead Space (no contradictions)
- Lighting was important for the dev team so that gamers? attention could be focused at a particular area
- Depending on whether the title is successful, there may/may not be another animated feature
- More info will be provided regarding Issac, events from the original game
- Extraction was always planned to be from the first-person perspective
- Three new weapons in Extraction

Dead Space: Extraction Rated 18, May Go Multiplatform
Cytuj
The British Board of Film Classification has rated EA's Wii-exclusive Dead Space prequel an 18+.

The listing comfirms that the title will ship as a mature/adult title, described as containing "strong bloody violence and strong language", fortunately with no cuts made.

There's also a heap of cutscenes/linear content, totalling up to 117m 37s - given the game is on rails it's uncertain whether it takes this aspect into account.

Dead Space Extraction to have massive replayability
http://nintendodpad.com/Welcome/News/Entries/2009/8/21_Dead_Space_Extraction_to_have_massive_replayability.html

Cytuj
Many fearing that this on-rails shooter will be a shallow play through, think again. Today producer Steve Papoutsis held a Q&A about the game and answered this question by revealing some secrets about the game.

?Extraction offers players tons of options in regard to replayability. The game includes 4 difficulty settings, 10 challenge modes, and a digital versions of all the original Dead Space comics. As you progress through the game you will unlocking the comics and the challenge modes so that should provide lots of things for players to do and enjoy. Players will also need to be on the lookout for weapon upgrades, audio, video and text logs. I hope players will be pleasantly surprised at how deep and replayable the game is.?

Wow, that actually is a great add in, with the comics being unlockables in the game. Much like the lores in Metroid Prime 3, the audio and video logs will also be great fun to get as those types of unlockables tell alot about the story.

?Extraction offers players tons of options in regard to replayability. The game includes 4 difficulty settings, 10 challenge modes, and a digital version of all the original Dead Space comics. - producer Steve Papoutsis

Dead Space Extraction has 500% more dialogue than original game
http://www.vg247.com/2009/09/18/dead-space-extraction-has-500-more-dialogue-that-original-game/

Cytuj
Dead Space Extraction has more than 500 percent more dialogue in it than the original game, senior designer John Calhoun confirmed in the video you can see after the break.

?One of the things that fans may not know about this game is that we actually have over five times more dialogue than the original Dead Space,? said the developer.

?This is a story-driven game, and the reason why it succeeds as a story-driven game is because of the calibre of the actors. This triple-A cast really delivers.?

Please, please watch the movie below. The Wii shooter releases on October 2, and in terms of presentation and voice acting at least, it looks most definitely ?not shit?.

Dead Space Extraction 8/10

"The title of Best On-Rails Gun Game Ever isn't the most prestigious, so let's try this; Dead Space Extraction is the Citizen Kane of on-rails gun games, or at the very least the Towering Inferno. But where other on-rails games sit comfortably within walls that have existed since Virtua Cop, Extraction thrashes about until the walls buckle. It's better designed, writen, acted & directed than 99% of any genre's games."

"An on-rails shooter it may be, but those rails are a work of art. With barely a pause for breath they plunge, bank and sometimes even break, launching you into the unknown before you crash onto a new, entirely unexpected course."

"Dead Space was a meticulously engineered survival horror, and the creepiest thing about Extraction is the ease with which it pulls that apart and rebuilds it as somthing else."

"Extraction is not just a gun game that happens to work on Wii; it's a gun game that couldn't work on anything else. Meanwhile, it's sharp writing, multinational cast and knockout looks, which owe a lot to some very moody lighting, lend it a multiplex charm that more than makes up for one notable foul-up; a poorly signposted boss battle."

Dead Space Extraction sales are not good
http://www.thatvideogameblog.com/2009/10/19/dead-space-extraction-sales-are-not-good/

Confirming what we already expected, a NeoGAF user believed to be Louis Gascoigne, a programmer at Visceral Games, has said that ?nobody bought? Dead Space: Extraction, likely meaning the game has not met sales expectations. In addition, he reiterated that the game was a test of the Wii audience, and that Extraction?s sales will affect the company?s future projects on the Wii.

But, although we remained hopeful until the end, we thought as much. It?s a shame really, for the game is high quality and made for an enjoyable outing for me and my friends who are Dead Space fans.

Visceral Games finds it a shame that no one bought Dead Space: Extraction
Cytuj
It is a shame nobody bought this. As much as everyone made fun of Frank Gibeau's "experiment" it will actually influence the SKU plan with respect to the Wii just like he said in his interview.

EA to blame customers for Dead Space sales instead of themselves
http://www.nintendodpad.com/Welcome/News/Entries/2009/10/22_EA_to_blame_customers_for_Dead_Space_sales_instead_of_themselves.html

Cytuj
We have all seen the numbers behind Dead Space Extraction, and frankly, they?re horrible. Unfortunately, EA will in turn blame Wii customers for not buying into their mature title efforts. Oh how EA screwed up, but thanks to the powers that be, Wii owners will be the ones being punished.

EA?s Games Label president Frank Gibeau once said Dead Space Extraction was to be an  ?experiment?, or test for Wii owners. Frank described the title as a ?calculated risk?, but does EA understand it would not have been a risk had they listened to core Wii owners? Instead of doing the obvious, the men upstairs decide- just like most other franchises that come to the Wii- to treat Wii core owners differently than the core owners for the PS3/Xbox.

Not only were Wii core owners excited about this game, but Xbox and PS3 owners aswell who were wanting more from the Dead Space universe after the original launched. Interest in the game was massive, until it was announced that the game was to be on-rails. On-rails, just what fans wanted right EA?

Frank once said ?We spent a lot of research, time, and understanding that the customer dynamics of who?s actually playing on the Wii... we think we?ve found a market on the Wii that would be interested in the Dead Space: Extraction experiment. We?re going to take a gamble and build that market.?[1] EA found a market? You mean the core market that were all excited about the game when it was first announced that you completely ignored while making the game?

How has EA not yet realized that Wii core owners exist, but will not buy games when they know EA is treating them like they?re second rate gamers?

Marketing could have helped as well, but EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich suggested that EA?s decision not to heavily market the title may have been based on the poor performance of other mature-rated Wii games released while Extraction was still in development.[2]

Doesn?t that make you feel good knowing EA hasn?t any faith in their projects? Makes you wonder how they can blame Wii owners for not buying their games. Then again, EA needs to understand that Wii core owners are no different than those of Xbox or PS3 core owners, we all want quality. Would you put a light gun Dead Space on Xbox? The Wii?s motion controls are there as an enhancement in controls, not a crutch for laziness.

The worst part of the story is that Visceral did a great job on the game. We reviewed the title and gave the game an 85%, stating that the production values were there, but the vision of what was important to core owners was missed (i.e. being a third person shooter). This however, was most likely not Visceral?s decision.

So will EA blame Wii owners? You bet if Visceral programmer Louis Gascoigne is to be trusted as he stated that the game failing ?will actually influence the SKU plan with respect to the Wii.?[3]

EA just needs to stop blaming Wii owners for their mistakes and failures. Instead, why don?t you come out and say ?look, we know we didn?t deliver the game everyone wanted, but to be honest, we didn?t have faith in the core gamers on Wii and were completely taking the route Capcom took on the platform with their Resident Evil series.?

With the kind of support the Wii gets from EA?s mature offerings is it no wonder their titles can?t sell?

"eksperyment", "test"

W ogóle podejście developerów do Wii mnie przeraża. :/
